Good-Bye Polk Momo, H-E-L-L-O Polk MM!

Polk Audio, MOMO, MM Series, SR Series,

At CES, Polk had a new series of speakers on display designed to replace the outgoing Polk MOMO series (no 4x10 though this time, sorry old school Chevy guys). The new MM Series will sit just below the SR series in the Polk product hierarchy, and will offer great sound quality at a higher-end-but-affordable price point. These speakers should prove to be pretty popular with those concerned with adding weight to the rides and those with rear clearance and space issues in doors.

The MM series features a very shallow carbon composite basket design. The slim figure is further enhanced on the separates and coaxials by a small but powerful neodymium magnet, coming in at 2 inches shallower than the MOMO series! The MM midbass drivers on both the coax and components also feature a glass fiber cone that Polk claims offers improved sonic properties over last years MOMO already great sounding line. The tweeter will be of the silk-type, but no details were yet available.

We've got a lot of pics after the jump and the most recent white paper from Polk.

Thanks to Mikey B at Polk for the info and additional pics!

White Paper info:

Designed To Perform Introducing the new Mobile Monitor (MM) Series high performance loudspeaker systems, the next generation in mobile loudspeaker design. The MM Series features 18 new models, including 3 Ultra Marine designs, to fit virtually any application on land and water. The MM Series is composed of 6 full range systems, 3 component packages and 9 subwoofers. As a result of 3 years of Polk research and development, the new MM systems have been designed to offer unparalleled sound quality with exceptional fit to meet virtually any application. Borrowing technology from our flagship SR Series, the MM Series offers exceptional value for the price. Through the use of high-tech carbon composite baskets, powerful Neodymium motor structures using oversized voice coils, and state-of-the-art woven glass composite cones, we offer high-end audio performance normally found only in the most expensive loudspeaker systems. In addition, these space age materials offer weight savings that can mean higher performance for your car or boat.

FEATURES

  • Space Age Materials reduce weight of components while offering rock solid reliability, advanced looks and ultra high performance.
  • Neodymium Magnets a rare earth metal offering exceptional strength to performance ratio, found only in the most exotic speakers, saves tremendous weight. Don’t let the sound system weigh your vehicle down.
  • Carbon Composite Basket based on the spokes of a wheel is lightweight, will not flex during peaks and looks great! Don’t be afraid to show off the back of your woofer.
  • Klippel Optimized Components using a state-of-the-art Klippel Distortion Analyzer, Polk engineers were able to optimize the woofer’s motor structure, voice coil alignment and suspension for the best possible performance, even at extreme listening levels.

FULL RANGE SPEAKER FEATURES

  • Woven Glass Composite Cones feature tremendous stiffness-to-mass ratio. Lower mass means faster transients and finer detail.
  • Large-Diameter Voice Coils (30mm) in drivers increase reliability and power handling capacity.
  • Swivel Mount Tweeters (coax models only) allow precise aiming of sound.

Price Point: $120 - $350pr

  • High Temperature Copper Voice Coil (51mm) and Polyamide Former withstands the most rigorous use while maintaining extremely low distortion for bass punch and output.
  • Available in Single and Dual Voice Coil Configurations allowing flexible wiring options.
  • Nickel Plated Heavy Duty Input Terminals accommodate speaker wire up to 8 AWG or twisted pairs of 12 AWG.
  • Available Matching Grilles complement the wheel spoke design.

Price Point: $100 - $200ea

MM ULTRA MARINE
The marine environment presents a special challenge. Salt water, high humidity, wide temperature range and relentless pounding from the sun take a toll on speakers. While any of the other MM Series may
be used for marine applications, 3 new dedicated Ultra Marine models have been created for your watercraft needs. Designed and styled specifically for use in the marine environment, they are not just car speakers painted white. Ultra Marine speakers match the contemporary look found on watercraft.

FEATURES

  • Completely Sealed front design prevents water intrusion.
  • Rugged, Built-On Grille Includes Tweeter Mount eliminates the need for a traditional tweeter post.
  • Sealed Crossover Assembly Built Into Back of Magnet means there’s no need to find room to hide an extra box.
  • Stainless Steel Heavy Duty Input Terminals will not corrode or tarnish.
  • Passes The Most Rigorous 600 Hours of Salt Fog and UV Testing (ATSM B117-03 Standard Practice for Operating Salt Spray (Fog) Apparatus, and D4329-99 Standard Practice for Fluorescent UV Exposure of Plastics).

Price Point: $120 - $350pr
