Add Bluetooth Streaming To Your 5G iPod
The 5G iPod has some pretty interesting hacks available; one of my favorites is swapping the hard drive out for a solid state compact flash. The downside that compact flash is limited to around 16GB last time I checked, so you'll be stepping down in capacity. But CF is more stable and can take much more abuse than a mobile hard drive.
But the guys over at Gizmodo just got the scoop on a new and much cooler iPod hack... internal Bluetooth. Bluetooth is one thing iPod has failed to add to any iPod, except of course the iPhone, which is great for the aftermarket industry, but man... c'mon Apple!! Is it so hard to understand that iPod owners woudl appreciate the ability to stream their audio wirelessly to Bluetooth devices that use the A2DP protocol? Well I guess Ed Hernández had enough as well and decided to something about it. After a month of research and trials, he finally figured out how to add a Bluetooth chip to his 30Gb 5G iPod, although now that all the hard work is done, the upgrade should only take a couple of hours. Due to real estate issues inside the iPod, he had to upgrade to a compact flash drive, and than added a clear case to show off the Bluetooth module's blue LED. Ed states the sound quality is pretty good and he's more than satisfied with his. Full details are available over at iPodHackers.
