Cheap GPS: Basics

Crunchgear had this funny comic on their site today. It's a little over-dramatic, but it does recognize something that consumers should be aware. Now that devices like GPS systems have been around for a few years, manufacturers have really started to differentiate their products and it's important to recognize that all GPS navigations systems are not created equal, not even those that fall even within similar price points. Screen size, upgradability/expandability, # of POI's, text-to-speech, Bluetooth, multimedia capability, size/dimensions, processor speed, etc, all these factors and more determine which portable nav will best serve your needs. I recommend for items like this to consider actually going into a store and touching and playing with the devices. You can find a lot of info all over the interweb (including here), but nothing beats an actual hands-on experience.
