Cool Things You Cannot Have: Sanyo NV-SD7000DT

Another example of cool stuff we cannot have: Sanyo just introduced this new navigation system over in Japan, the NV-SD7000T. The unit features a 7” touchscreen, realistic street-level 3D mapping, and split screen capability. The screen also features a built-in TV tuner and can actual record live broadcasts to an SD card. The split screen feature can also be used to view TV content while navigating as well (SoundDomain does NOT recommend this).
All GPS navs feature points of interest like restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, etc, but this unit features a very unique bit of information: crime rates. The Osaka police department in Japan teamed up with Sanyo and provided regional data of areas that have a high theft rate from parked cars. The map uses red, yellow, and blue to indicate different levels of theft. Pretty nifty feature. The data is limited to Osaka only at the moment, with plans to expand to include the rest of Japan in the future. The unit features a 4GB SD card for map and POI data, which is twice as large as Sanyo’s previous PNDs. MSRP will be a little over $1000 US. Pretty nifty idea, although I’m not sure viable in the US since we’re a bit larger than Japan and our crime information would probably have to be stored on a separate 4GB SD card. (Kidding).
