Top Of The Line Car-Fi (Circa 1960's)
Many people to this day will argue analog music's superiority to the digital format we're all so now accustomed. After all, why else would anybody build or buy a turntable for $35,000?! Well, if you're one of the analog fans, then maybe you should try digging up one of these little guys: The Norelco Mignon in-car turntable. This "little guy" installs under the dash and accepts 45's (single load, not a changer). They were designed for use in specific cars, but dealers started installing them in car outside of the manufacturer's recommendations. Since the player was calibrated for specific car suspensions, this led to a lot of dissatisfied customers and ultimately the demise of this unique idea. Follow the jump for some pics and some additional sources of info on this retro-car audio product.
Consumer Reports reviewed this unit back in 1961 and stated:
"The needle of the Norelco Auto Mignon stays in the groove of our 45s, even when we drive over rough roads. But since there's no record changer, we must insert each record we want to play, then remove it when the song is over."
"Joe G" decided he wanted to add one to the 1958 Buick Riviera he was restoring.
