I Want That: Prestige Security

I Want That, Al & Ed's Autosound, Whipnotic, Prestige Alarm Remote Start

In this week's "I Want That" installment, Mr. Mobile tempts our gadget appetites with a taste of the Prestige XRO9100 alarm/remote start convenience system. Probably the most obvious cool factor with this system is the OLED-equipped two-way paging remote. The remote provides system status information as well as command confirmation when you tell it do something. If you've remote started the car, it tells you. If you attempted to remote start the car, and it fails, the remote tells you. If your alarm was tripped while you were away, the remote tells you what zone was triggered. And that's only the tip of the iceberg. And the fact that it uses an OLED display means it's easily readable in sunlight, and it uses less energy than a same-sized full color LCD. Get more details on the system, as well as info on how you can win one of these full-featured systems, after the jump!

E-Ink Will Change the Face of Displays

e-Ink, Delphi, car remote, key fob

When Pioneer introduced their Organic EL displays back in 1998, it changed the industry forever. OEL required less electricity to run, produced less heat, and could produce much more vibrant colors and depth than regular liquid crystal. And at CES we saw a few manufacturers introducing full-color Organic LED TVs. So what's next? E-Ink, that's what.

E-ink has a lot of characteristics that will make a pretty handy technology in the mobile electronics world. Just in case you weren't aware, this is the same technology used in Amazon's Kindle and Sony's Reader e-books. The tech is 40% thinner than typical LCD's, can be cut into odd shapes, requires less power and withstands higher and lower temps than LCD, and is flexible/bendable. The first application in the automotive world will come from Delphi, used in their new alarm/keyless entry key fobs. Seems like a pretty good fit. I wonder when or if we'll start seeing it used in radio displays? Organic LED seems like the best bet for radio displays at the moment, but who knows... Maybe e-ink will go full color one day and pass up OLED.

How To: Motorcycle Alarm Install

Directed Electronics, Motorcycle Alarm Install, Security, Motorcycle Theft

To some, motorcycles are just really expensive toys; to others they're a main mode of transportation and a cherished pride and joy. Whatever it is to you, it's probably a good idea to make sure it's protected. Motorcycle theft rates increased over 135% in the last five years, but the saddest part is that only around 30% of the thefts are recovered. In 2005, approximately 70,600 motorcycles were stolen in the US.* Hopefully one of those was not yours.

However, all is not lost. Did you know you can actually install an alarm system on your motorcycle that offers similar protection to that of a car alarm? Shock sensors, tilt sensors, siren, starter kill - all of these things can help prevent the theft of your bike. It may also help reduce your insurance rate.

So what's involved and how difficult is it? The guys from the Snake Pit hooked us up with a tutorial on how to install an alarm on your bike. Follow the jump to check out the details and pics.

I Want That: Mods4Cars Smart Top

I Want That, Al & Ed's Autosound, Mods4Cars SmartTOP,

Al & Ed's Mr. Mobile is back with another installment of "I Want That". This week the featured product is the SmartTOP convertible roof controller. The SmarTOP adds one-touch control of your convertible roof via your keyless remote for most newer European convertible cars, Mercedes, VW, Audi, and Porsche included. Not only do you get one-touch up and down control of the roof, but the SmartTOP also adds single touch remote control window/up down. Yeah, true, the option should have come this way from the factory, but at least now you can correct their oversight with the SmarTOP! Follow the jump to check out the video demo of the product.

Limited Edition Susan G. Komen Pink Viper Remote

Directed Electronics, Pink Responder LE, Susan G. Koman, Limted Edition

The alarm gurus over at Directed Electronics teamed up with the Susan G. Koman Foundation on this new limited edition pink Viper Responder LE remote. We saw this at CES but held back on releasing the pics until all the details had been finalized. They have, and here it is. A percentage of the proceeds from the sale of the systems will be donated to the Susan G. Koman foundation to support breast cancer research. This kind of deal is rare in our industry, and I applaud Directed for doing something a bit different. I have a feeling this will be a big hit... Not because it supports breast cancer research (which is great), but because it's an "oh-my-gawd-that's-super-cute" pink remote.  Small gallery after the break.
