How Loud Was the Ocean Center at SBN?

I LOVE Spring Break Nationals. It is by far one of my favorite shows. SVR is another favorite, but for completely different reasons. SBN is one of those shows that I go to for the crowds as much as the competitors. Having thousands of people milling around a car audio show is always fun.

The Ocean Center is where we retreat to when it gets too hot outside. The only issue is that it is loud inside. How loud?  According to this handy chart, here are some average sounds as expressed in dB:

Mini Team Zapco Member Wins MECA Kids Shootout at SBN!

Team Zapco member Steve McIntyre has turned his passion for car audio into a family affair. Steve started out as an installer back in 1991, competed for the first time in 1994, and took second at the IASCA World Finals in 1995. I was invited to dinner with Team Zapco the final evening of SBN this year, and had the pleasure of meeting Steve and his family.

Steve and his 11-year old daughter Andrea (who is also a Team Zapco member) built this Jeep Powerwheels to compete in the MECA Kids  series. The project took one weekend to complete, and has about as much gear as a regular full car audio system (complete system list after the jump)! Andrea helped her father build the car, shooting most of the brads for the subwoofer box, running wires, and painting the car.

All the work paid off too, as Andrea took home two first place trophies at the end of the weekend! We've got some pics and video of Andrea and Jeep Powerwheels after the jump.

Steve Cook Blasts Windshield At 172.2dB

During the many hours of sound off competition this past weekend at Spring Break Nationals, there was one very notable event, and I just happened to miss it. Steve Cook hit a 172.2dB and blew out his windshield during his run at the IdBL competition, well actually, he sucked it in. Confused? So was everybody else! The pic you see here was captured by SoundDomain moderator and SQ competitor Andy Jones during the now famous run through the lanes. We have a few more pics and video after the jump!

How Not To Do It: Custom Fish Tank Install

If you know the name Dave "Fishman" Rivera, then then you're probably familiar with his signature move of putting a fish tank somewhere in most of his custom installs. Well, while down at Spring Break Nationals I came across this Monte Carlo at the Tuner Jam portion of the show. From a distance it looked like it was a pretty cool install and featured a Fishman-esque install in the trunk. In between a custom piano black fiberglass panel was a fish tank. Only problem was, it was 80+ degrees outside and the trunk was open, exposing the fish to all the sun. Needless to say, the fish weren't really swimming around, more like... floating. Yep.
