Deep South Nationals is proud to announce that Ben Vollmer and his Car Audio Nationals (CAN) series will make a stop at DSN 2009!!! This will mark the second year DSN and CAN have teamed up at the June show held in Biloxi, MS.
CAN will be sponsoring the 1 seat class at DSN and will give away $500 in CASH to the winner!!!
To enter the CAN event there is NO entry fee… all you need to do is Join the MotorMusicMag car club! Not only can you be part of one of the most elite car clubs, you also have a chance to win prizes. Join and we'll put your car to the vote.
There are two categories with three sections each. Enter your daily driver, mildly modified car or extreme custom vehicle. Or if you're an installer, enter a vehicle that you've built for a customer. If you and your vehicle are selected, you will be given your own area within our car club section of the website. There you can tell other members and our readers about the custom work you've done and what projects you plan on doing next. 2008 MECA Rookie of the Year / World Champion – Robert Petty of Team SoundDomain

By: Ben Vollmer - Team SoundDomain / Car Audio Nationals

Robert Petty is one of the more technical team members of Team SoundDomain in 2008. Scratch that. Robert is THE technical team member of Team SoundDomain in 2008. His background in electrical engineering has helped out many of us on the team and paid off for him. You can see his install complete with his kids helping with his install on the SoundDomain forums.

He won despite his Alpine Head unit failing in the lanes and having to wait to cool down. With a full compliment of Zapco amps, a Morel front stage, and Image Dynamics subwoofers, his Do-It-Yourself install performed awesomely.

I know I personally am excited to see what he has in store for the 2009 Competition Season. In 2008 he won the following awards:

  • 2008 Rookie of the Year
  • 2008 Alabama State Champion
  • 2008 MECA Amateur World Champion

He placed in the Top Ten at every top 30 round he attended.

He was the highest scoring member of MECA in the Amateur Class with a high score of 57.70 which is an awesome score. Robert also went undefeated In MECA, which included the following shows:

  • 4th Annual AL Sound-off Trail Kick-off Party
  • Audio X Nationals
  • 2nd Annual HiFi Buys Summer Nationals
  • 4th Annual Thunder On The Mountain
  • Elite Summer Nationals
  • Alabama Sound-off Trail
  • Georgia Soundfest - State Finals
  • Alabama Soundfest - State Finals

Congrats Robert!

Weekend Plans? Greg Welch Memorial Show

By: Ben Vollmer, Car Audio Nationals/Team SoundDomain

If you are anything like me, it is about three weeks from MECA Finals and you ALMOST have enough points to qualify. But not quite. So this Saturday, I am headed to North Georgia for the last non-State Finals event on the MECA Event Schedule. In addition to MECA being there, Tim and Alison Brown also have an IASCA 2x Event with Moe and Terry being there in hopes of iDBL World Records being broken.

The show starts at 1 PM and is one of the most affordable shows I have seen all season. It is $15.00 plus a toy to get into the show area, and then $10.00 for each event you want to compete in. So if you do IASCA and MECA Sound Quality, it would be $35.00 plus one toy as a donation to Toys for Tots. Which is what most shows charge for one class.

The Loudness Wars Rage On! Is FLAC as Good as CD Sound Quality?

By: Robert Petty, Team SoundDomain

This question came up while discussing the poor recording practices used these days. I've posted before about what compressing music into MP3 format does to your recordings. I decided to take a song that I like and compare the original CD recording to a FLAC version of it. The song? Steve Winwood "Higher Love" It has a nice percussion intro, and some decent dynamics. Steve's voice is pretty "thin" sounding compared to some, but that makes it even harder for an ordinary system to produce it realistically. So here's the results.

Doing an A/B comparison between the FLAC recording and the original CD, I sat in the car with just these two discs and played them both several times without looking at which disc I was listening to. The volume seemed identical. The only thing I could pick out was one of them seemed to have a little better dynamics than the other. For those who have never heard that term before, it's basically the difference between the "soft" parts of a track and the "loud" parts of the track. One of the discs seemed to have a little more definition between the soft and loud parts of the song, and there were some very faint details that were more clear in the same disc. Before we discuss which was the better one, let's look at the analysis.

FLAC vs CD Sound Quality

Dead To Me: Isolating Your Feet From The Floor

Second Skin Audio, Sound Deadening, Sound Damping

Team SoundDomain's Andy Jones just posted up a great how-to for custom floormats that also work to isolate floorboard vibration and road noise. And the best part? They're pretty simple to make and not too expensive! Now, he can't take all the credit, he acutally got the idea from fellow Team SoundDomain member Rick Sellers. Props to both for a great idea! What are you waiting for? Get Dead!
